He may be a 57-year-old grandfather and father-of-four, but Tom Hanks still likes to live on the wild side.
The Da Vinci Code actor took his son Truman out on Saturday to buy a brand new Vespa, and couldn't resist the urger to take it for a spin himself.
Heading out to the Vespa dealership in Sherman Oaks, California, Tom looked like one cool rider dressed in blue jeans, brown leather shoes and a beige jacket.

I'll take it: Tom Hanks took his son Truman to a Vespa dealership in Sherman Oaks to buy a brand new scooter on Saturday, and couldn't help but go for a spin
With his trendy aviator sunglasses the Forrest Gump actor certainly cut a youthful figure as his son Truman checked out the bikes.

In fact the actor seemed to be embodying the titular character from his 2011 film Larry Crowne.
In the movie Tom plays a middle-aged man who after losing his job reinvents himself by going back to college, and rides around on a Vespa.

Experienced: Tom, 57, who knows a thing or two about Vespas having filmed Larry Crowne, appeared to be intently watching the scooter before he took it for a ride

Easy rider: Tom looked cool in his aviator shades, blue jeans and beige suede jacket as arrived at the Vespa dealership on Saturday
At one point the easygoing actor appeared to pose with a passer-by who wanted a photograph with the star.
Tom is no doubt enjoying some down time before the publicity of trail of his next movie Saving Mr. Banks.
The film is Disney’s take on P.L. Travers life (played by Emma Thompson)  and, eventually, the stormy relationship she had with the studio’s own mastermind, Walt Disney (played by Hanks).

Getting ready to ride: Tom couldn't resist getting on the bike and took safety precautions as he went to put his helmet on

I want that one: Tom is currently enjoying some down time between movies, and will next be seen playing Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks
It was also revealed earlier this month that Tom will be back for the next Dan Brown movie Inferno.
The actor was expected to return as Harvard University symbologist Robert Langdon for the adaptation of The Lost Symbol, the third novel in the thriller series best known for The Da Vinci Code, but will instead star in the adaptation of Brown's fourth international bestseller, Inferno.
Deadline.com also reported that director Ron Howard, who worked on the adaptation of the second novel, Angels & Demons, backed out of directing the third chapter and has instead jumped straight to the fourth book, Inferno.

Ready to ride: Tom looked much younger than his 57-years as he took the Vespa out for a test drive wearing cool aviator shades

In demand: It was revealed earlier this month that Tom will be back for the next Dan Brown movie Inferno

Taking it easy: Tom is no doubt enjoying some much needed down time before the publicity of trail of his next movie Saving Mr. Banks

Biker boy: Hanks was seen with his son Truman enjoying testing out Vespas at a local dealership in Sherman Oaks
After adapting the last film, David Koepp is set to write the screenplay for the forthcoming release.
Danny Strong appeared to be penning the adaptation for The Lost Symbol in March 2012, which was to be directed by Mark Romanek after Ron Howard opted out, but little had been heard about the project since.
The Da Vinci Code grossed $758million worldwide in 2006 and Angels & Demons took in $486million worldwide in 2009, so there are high expectations for 'Inferno', which is set to be released on December 18, 2015.

Getting his practice in: Tom takes Julia Roberts for a spin on the set of his 2011 movie Larry Crowne

Famous Vespa Riders

Pete
Who better to espouse the virtues of the mighty Vespa, than the God of Quad himself, Mr Pete Townshend. He even drives it in through his side door and parks it in the hall. How Mod is that?!
Pete
Owen Wilson
Owen Wilson - very funny and now, it seems, quite cool too.
Sam Delaney
Sam Delaney - journalist, broadcaster and general geezer. We couldn't find a picture of him on His Vespa, but trust us, he's got one.
Dean Digger
2006 Masterchef Finalist, Dean "Digger" Edwards has swapped his Bobcat for a Vespa LX50. He can be seen riding it on BBC2's Beat The Takeaway, still on L plates, but fair do's to the lad.

Jude Law At last, Jude Law does something that will make him attractive to women.

David Arquette

David Arquette. Great taste in scooters, women and clothes. Two out of three ain't bad.

Jay Kay

Jay Kay. Finally stopped mincing around in Lamborghinis and got some proper wheels.

Nicole Kidman

We doubt very much that Nicole Kidman rides a Vespa on a regular basis, but she looked so good on this GT in a recent film role we decided to include her.
Tom Symonds
Tom Symonds has been the BBC News Transport Correspondent for over nine years.  He says he wouldn't swap his Vespa for a car.  His mum wishes he'd smile more often, because he's got a lovely smile.
Michelle Dewberry
Winner of The Apprentice 2006, Michelle Dewberry, could be seen riding her Vespa into the City in the opening sequence of the programme.  She also recently succeeded Lisa Rogers as Fittest Famous Lass with a Vespa.
Lisa Rogers
Lisa Rogers rode a pink PX in the Channel 4 show Scrapheap Challenge: Scrappy Races, took part in a ride round European cities for Euro 2000 in Mark Owen's Celebrity Scooters, participated in the Round Britain Rideout in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust, and was recently deposed by Michelle Dewberry as Fittest Famous Lass with a Vespa.
Simon Donald
Legendary potty-mouthed co-creator of Viz Comic Simon Donald has a very nice Vespa GS, because he's rich and he can afford one.  He also has a very nice Lambretta, because he's extremely rich.  I met him at the Isle of Wight rally and he's been avoiding me ever since.
Steve Cradock
Ocean Colour Scene lead guitarist and all-round cool dude Steve Cradock is a well-known scooterist.  He owns a few.  Although this isn't one of them.
Andrew Ikon
Kaiser Chiefs
Ikon Footwear sponsor this PX ridden by Andrew 'Whitey' White of the Kaiser Chiefs (seen here in the parka, of course).
Gwyneth Paltrow
